Vila Real de Santo António

Vila Real de Santo António is a coastal town that is located on the eastern edge of the Algarve town bordering Espana. The city was built by Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, known by the Marquis of Pombal, Secretary of State during the reign of Joseph I (1750-1777) the same. The city is built around the square that bears the name of its creator, Marques de Pombal Square.

Former Royal Square, today named Praça Marquês de Pombal, filled the Civic Center and shopping in the middle of the age of enlightenment. There were located the Casa da Câmara, jail, the guard corps, and the Church. In the Center is located the Obelisk. The buildings that make up the square consist of ground floor and first floor. Ground floor was dedicated to trade, and the first floor was dedicated to housing. The Obelisk represents the Royal power and the urbanity, dedicated to King D .José I.

The beach of Vila Real de Santo António is 2.7 km from the Centre of the city. If you enjoy walking or cycling, you can enjoy a pleasant walk along the river Guadiana to the beach. The beach is named after the beach of Santo António.
